Out of Gauge Freight Solutions
Sea and Road
The transportation of a 75 tonne, 13.5m x 4m x 4m industrial boiler from Lincoln, Nebraska to a waste wood bio-mass plant in Plymouth.
Other smaller out of gauge ancillary items to be delivered on the same day as the boiler.
The Problem
A last minute change of position by the American railway authority meant we could not rail this boiler to our preferred port of exit of Baltimore and then to UK.
- Out of Gauge cargo requires specialist shipping
- The shipping lanes served are different from the current route
Given that it was no longer possible to transport the boiler by rail from manufacturer to port an alternative had to be found. Espace looked for a way to help.

The Solution
A last minute change of position by the American railway authority meant we could not rail this boiler to our preferred port of exit of Baltimore and then to UK.
After numerous meetings with road and sea freight suppliers in the US & UK and our customer in Plymouth, a solution was designed with on-site project management in the US, Belgium and the UK to load onto a Chipolbrok heavy weight ship, offloading in Antwerp for onward sea and road transport to Plymouth.

The Result
We collected the boiler from site in Nebraska in mid May and delivered to site in Plymouth a month later.
- 5000 miles, 75 tonnes, 13.5m x 4m x 4m and 10 months planning
- On time and on budget
