Are you old enough to remember the time when it was optional to wear a seat belt in the UK? Road safety has come a long way since those days and modern vehicles are fitted with a wide range of safety devices. Here are just some of the advances that have been made in recent times to keep drivers, passengers and pedestrians safe.

Lane departure systems: A number of car manufacturers are starting to fit lane departure systems to vehicles in an attempt to reduce road traffic accidents. The systems warn drivers if their vehicle is veering into another lane, and vehicle warning notifications are also available that tell you if another car is in your blind spot.

Fatigue warning software: Ever been in a position where you felt like you were nodding of at the wheel? Scary isn’t it? Fatigue warning systems prevent this. They detect when a driver’s actions are slowing down using eye detection sensors, they’ll give you plenty of warning and could prevent a nasty accident.

Hazard detection sensors: Front and rear sensors can detect if a vehicle is travelling too close to other traffic, some systems will slow the car down automatically if it gets too close to a vehicle in front, taking the initiative away from the driver.

Head-up displays: Screen displays are being used right now that provide the driver with clear information without them having to take their eyes off the road. The systems are similar to the head-up displays used by fighter pilots and there’s a strong possibility they’ll be gradually introduced to all vehicles within the next couple of decades.

Automatic lights and wipers: Modern cars are equipped with lights that switch on automatically when it goes dark and wipers that react as soon as it starts raining. Again, these are important safety features that help to reduce accidents on the road and you’ll find them in a host of makes and models.
